A Beautiful Teaparty

Tweedledum and Tweedledee, in a fit of uncontrollable laughter, rehearse a dance number as The Mad Hatter briefs the party staff. As I admire the enchanted space, the Queen of Hearts poses for a photo beside a grinning Cheshire Cat. If it isn’t evident enough, Alice in Wonderland has inspired today’s themed party – one for children with special-needs. “Would you like a little more tea?”*

Amidst all this excitement, the children are getting makeovers in an adjacent building. The girls chatter excitedly as they get their hair, nails, and makeup done. Their boyfriends take photographs and straighten out their bowties. Their mothers smile and ask what they can do to help. Volunteers introduce themselves and offer each other supplies and chocolates.

Some of tonight’s party guests have preferred to sit quietly on their riverbanks, and some have adventured down the rabbit hole of life. Either way, we attempt to show them that it is possible to find their own version of wonderland, if only for one beautiful day.

*From the 1951 Disney animated film, Alice in Wonderland:

Mad Hatter: Would you like a little more tea?
Alice: Well, I haven’t had any yet, so I can’t very well take more.
March Hare: Ah, you mean you can’t very well take less.
Mad Hatter: Yes. You can always take more than nothing.”
